The Story Behind the Bird's Nest’s Zero-Accident Record

In 2008, JLL Beijing’s Property and Asset Management team was appointed as the property management team for the Bird's Nest, tasked with providing the highest level of international management services for this magnificent building.

As an iconic Beijing landmark, the National Stadium, also known as the Bird's Nest, is a unique and internationally recognizable building. Its total area of 258,000 m2 can accommodate 91,000 spectators, and it was here that the opening and closing ceremonies of the Beijing Olympic Games and Paralympics Games were held. It was also the venue for all Olympic track and field events as well as the soccer finals. In 2008, JLL Beijing’s Property and Asset Management team was appointed as the property management team for the Bird's Nest, tasked with providing the highest level of international management services for this magnificent building.

“JLL’s work was outstanding, we salute you!”

— Vice Mayor of Beijing, Cheng Gang

As the venue for many major Olympic events, the job of guarding the Bird's Nest could not be underestimated. Furthermore, since the stadium was a key symbol of the Beijing Olympic Games, the quality and integrity of the management team had to be exemplary, and in the face of such high standards, JLL's property management team stood up to the pressure of the challenge. During the pre-games test period and the Olympic and Paralympic Games themselves, nearly 1,000 field professionals and environmental control team members from JLL were stationed at the stadium, where they provided pre-Games consultancy and comprehensive on-site management and operations services. During the Games, about 50 JLL employees were stationed at the stadium around the clock, performing routine maintenance and security checks to ensure the smooth operation of the building.

During the service period, JLL were always reliable and on-schedule, offering value-added advice to customers and delivering a wide range of services to ensure comprehensive management and control of the stadium. These services included Environmental Management, Security and Emergency Management, Project Management and Financial Management. We ensured that all facilities in the stadium were maintained for the best operational effectiveness and set benchmarks across the entire property management market from planning to implementation, through meeting international standards and setting the finest best operating practices.

“Thank you for your contribution during the Beijing Olympics.”

—Vice Mayor of Beijing & Vice Chairman of BOCOG, Liu Jingmin

Our zero-accident record was a great accomplishment as part of this historic project, and we were highly praised by the Vice Mayor of Beijing & Vice Chairman of BOCOG, Liu Jingmin, as well as the Vice Mayor of Beijing, Cheng Gang. Our on-site property management team at the Bird's Nest also received special praise from the Good Luck Beijing committee, and were the only team working behind the scenes which never took a break. After the Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games ended, our team went on to win numerous further awards for their work.

The skills required to manage a large-scale government venue for such a historic event fully demonstrated JLL’s professional experience, high service standards, organizational capacity and contingency planning when it comes to property management. Our team is able to work for long hours and withstand great pressure, all while maintaining outstanding team spirit. We use this positive attitude to help our clients face ever-greater challenges and achieve their visions.
